The mission of Enjipai Community Project is clear and powerful: create a Maasai-run educational program with an equal emphasis and balance between high quality instruction and indigenous knowledge, centered within Mfereji village. Once the Mfereji project is successfully completed and efficiently running, we will implement the same unique model to other remote Maasai villages that demonstrate genuine need and desire for education

The Enjipai Community Project was founded by Lekishon Tutunyo (pictured above), a Maasai hailing from the remote village of Mfereji. Lekishon moved to Arusha in 2003 in an attempt to help his village financially. Looking for work in the city, Lekishon was faced with the distressing reality that his people face every day: without education, employment opportunities were harshly limited. Facing head-on the challenges to survival in our rapidly-changing world, Lekishon realized the vital importance of education for Maasai communities.
In 2009, he purchased a blackboard and chalk for his village and began paying two teachers to help educate the children of Mfereji. Unfortunately, with the uncertain economy and declines in tourist numbers, and thus, the amount of work available to him, Lekishon could no longer afford to pay the teachers himself. He knew that he needed to do more for his people. This desire to provide more to his community by establishing a school in proximity to the village led him to found the Enjipai Community Project. He named the project after his younger brother, a representative of the youth of Mfereji whom he hopes to serve through this project. In Maa, Enjipai means happiness, a feeling that will surely increase in the Mfereji community upon receiving access to education.

The Enjipai Community Project is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to enhancing educational opportunity for Maasai children. Currently within Mfereji village, children are being taught underneath an Acacia tree, and they are eager to learn and gather whenever a teacher has assembled. Enjipai is currently looking for funding to assist in building a much-needed pre-primary school classroom. Once built, the funds raised will go towards supplying the classroom with educational tools, such as chalkboards, desks, text books, and hopefully, in the future, computers. In addition to building a classroom building, funding is also needed to build future volunteer housing for those continuing to assist in the effortsEnjipai project development. Donations are greatly appreciated. Every dollar raised brings us a step closer to bringing education to the children of Mfereji village. The goals of the Enjipai Community Project will only be reached with the help of generous donors whom wish to make a positive difference in the lives of Maasai children. We value every donation made towards Enjipai no matter how big or small. We also highly appreciate fundraisers held in the name of Enjipai to raise not only funds but also awareness of the project and the general struggle to provide Maasai communities with access to education. This may also prove to be a very enjoyable way of getting others in your community involved in the efforts of the Enjipai Community Project.
The current goal of the Enjipai project is to build a pre-primary school in the remote village of Mfereji, located in the Monduli district of Northern Tanzania. This school is designed to prepare children for upcoming primary school, teaching them basic educational skills and introductory English and Swahili. Within Tanzania, the educational system is very competitive. Children must enter primary school with some preliminary educational training if they hope to succeed and move forward in their future education. Enjipai will supply the children with the tools they need in preparation for the educational system. The location of the school will be in close proximity to the village, thus creating easy access to all the school has to offer. No longer will the children of Mfereji be left without any options for education; the school will cater to their learning needs, distinct culture, and remote location.
The next step in the Enjipai project is to build Primary and Secondary schools near Mfereji village, enabling the children to gain quality education in close proximity to their home. Once the schools in Mfereji are successfully in place and thriving, we will expand the Enjipai Community Project to other remote Maasai villages. With a focus on maintaining and promoting traditional knowledge while adhering to the highest standard in education, Enjipai will continuously be moving forward in the prospect of educational opportunity for all Maasai children.
